Mezzegra is a municipality in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy and enjoys a central position on the desirable Western shore of the lake. Agriculture was very prominent in the village, as the name 'Mezzegra' is derived from the Latin words 'in medi agrum', which means 'in the middle of fields'. A delicious red wine is produced today from local grape vines, which can be sampled in some of the local bars.
Although Mezzegra is a small village it is very well known for an event in history, namely the execution of Mussolini and his lover Claretta Petacci, on 28th April 1945. They had been captured the previous day, whilst trying to escape across the border to Switzerland and a black wooden cross now marks the spot. The village has a pretty lakeside location and has many amenities, including supermarkets, a bakery and bars and it also has a good bus service. Some places of interest include a public park, the Piazza Magnolia and the Church of S Gaetano. Also, the Church of S. Abbondio, which dates back to the seventeenth century, is one of the most important in the area. | |
